Understanding Lead Hazards
Sources of lead in homes, building era risk assessment, and paint condition evaluation.
Lead Sources in Homes
Lead-based paint on walls, trim, doors, and windows in pre-1978 homes. Lead dust from deteriorating paint and renovation activities. Lead in soil around foundations from exterior paint and leaded gasoline. Lead pipes and plumbing solder in pre-1986 homes. Imported ceramics, antique furniture, and other consumer products.
Building Era Lead Risk
Pre-1940 homes have 87% likelihood of lead paint. 1940-1959 homes have 69% likelihood. 1960-1977 homes have 24% likelihood. Post-1978 homes are low risk as lead paint was banned for residential use.
Lead Paint Condition Assessment
Intact paint is low hazard but must be monitored. Deteriorating paint with peeling, chipping, or flaking is high hazard requiring remediation. Friction and impact surfaces like windows and doors generate ongoing lead dust.
