Understanding Asbestos
Learn about different asbestos types, where they are found in buildings, and risk levels by building era.
Types of Asbestos
Chrysotile (white) accounts for 95% of asbestos used, found in roofing and insulation. Amosite (brown) has very high cancer risk, used in pipe and ceiling insulation. Crocidolite (blue) is the most dangerous with extremely fine fibers. Tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite are less common types.
Common Asbestos Locations
Popcorn and textured ceilings, floor tiles especially 9x9 inch and mastic, pipe and duct insulation, vermiculite attic insulation, roofing shingles and felt, siding and cement board, HVAC duct tape, electrical panel backing, window glazing and caulk, boiler and furnace insulation.
Building Era Asbestos Risk
Pre-1980 buildings have high likelihood of asbestos in multiple locations. 1980-1990 buildings may still contain some asbestos materials. Post-1990 buildings have lower likelihood but not zero. Professional testing required before renovation of older buildings.
